A Perth-based charity is continuing to provide sanitary products to people who need them during the lockdown, thanks to its Tampon Taxi.
Staff members and volunteers at Perth and Kinross Association of Voluntary Service (PKAVS) began the scheme last month and have so far delivered free period products to around 50 households.
The Tampon Taxi initially began in Perth City but has since expanded to Crieff, Blairgowrie and Kinross.
Team Leader of the PKAVS Minority Communities Hub, Jenni Keenan said it was an important service.
She said: “The idea came about during a discussion about how we could maintain period dignity and make free period products available within communities if we were unable to work from The Gateway in Perth.
“We have been working closely with PKC and other partners for over a year now to roll out free access to period products through schools, colleges, and third sector and community organisations with Scottish Government funding.
“This is an extension of that same work, which the Perth & Kinross Community Planning Partnership have been really supportive of.”
People who want to use the Tampon Taxi service can get in touch with the organisation by text or email.
The request is passed on a staff member, who will leave the sanitary products in a paper bag at the person’s front door.
Ms Keenan said: “The response has been really positive so far.
“Those receiving products are primarily those who are in self-isolation, or who would usually get free products from school, college or another service, although it is open to absolutely anyone.
“We often get a wee text after a delivery to say thank you and express how much of a help the service is to someone.”
The Tampon Taxi will operate for at least as long as the lockdown continues, but may continue once it is lifted.
