Five motorists were caught doing more than 100mph on Tayside roads this weekend as police officers slammed the “thoughtless and reckless behaviour”.
One driver was recorded travelling at the “phenomenally stupid” speed of 132mph on the M90, near Bridge of Earn, on Saturday night.
Another three motorists were caught on the M90 driving at speeds in excess of 100mph with another caught on the A90.
In total 39 drivers were caught speeding on Tayside roads over the weekend including someone travelling at 96mph on the A90.
Officers have all ready been forced to warn speeding motorists that the quieter roads “are not a racetrack” amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Greg Burns, Tayside Roads Policing Unit’s Inspector, said: “There is absolutely no excuse for driving at speeds like this.
“While the roads may be quieter due to the coronavirus lockdown, they are no less dangerous.
“Thoughtless and reckless behaviour like this can, and does, lead to serious injuries and worse.
“If you are caught speeding and find yourself being fined or banned, you have no-one to blame but yourself.”
In addition the 39 people caught speeding, officers also detected numerous other offences, including 13 motorists driving without insurance.
Inspector Burns said: “It’s also worth reminding everyone that even though you may be using your car less frequently than usual, it still needs to be fully and properly insured.
“Despite the lifestyle changes we are all currently dealing with, our officers are still out patrolling the roads, and in conjunction with our colleagues policing local communities, will continue to trace and deal with those selfish individuals who wrongly believe that speed limits and road laws do not apply to them.”
