Perth and Kinross councillors have proposed scrapping their six week summer break this year.
Committee meetings are usually suspended for a month and a half each summer as elected members go on recess.
However, the council’s SNP group have called on the local authority to continue the newly started digital committee meetings throughout the summer, given the exceptional circumstances.
Online sessions streamed through Microsoft Teams began last week, and the inaugural planning and development management committee meeting was completed without any hitches.
SNP group leader Grant Laing would like to see work continue throughout the summer, but not at the expense of council officers’ annual leave.
The Strathtay ward councillor said his plan had unanimous backing from within the party.
He said: “If there is agreement from other councillors and their political groups then this SNP policy would provide the opportunity for continued momentum of the newly established digital committees, the first of which saw a successful planning and development management committee last week.”
A council spokesperson said: “During the Covid-19 pandemic, the council and its officers has an unswerving focus on delivery of essential services and providing food, medicine and support for vulnerable people.
“An appropriate decision-making structure is in place and the chief executive and executive officers meet weekly with group leaders. This will continue for the foreseeable future.”
