Walkers blamed for kicking down fence at Kinross golf club so they can gain access to grounds

Kinross Golf Course has been targeted by vandals who tore down a fence in a lockdown wrecking spree.

Youths also spray painted obscenities on the golf carts as the club fell foul to hooligans on Thursday night.

Jamie Montgomery, managing director, said people had been causing damage to the two courses while using the land for exercise during the coronavirus restrictions.

He said : “The fence has been kicked down by walkers so they can gain access.

“They could have climbed over the fence but they have developed over the last two months a divine right to the course.

“Someone has decided to take the law into their own hands. It’s quite unnecessary.

“It will be interesting to see what happens when the golf balls start flying again,” he added.

“We’ve also had a group of youths spray paint offensive words on the buggies but it’s nothing some soap and water won’t take out.”

One employee at the course said: “People are actually going to the point of vandalism just to get access to the golf courses.

“The spars on the gate had been kicked off so people could walk right through.

“Also we had golf buggies vandalised at the back of the pro shop.

“It’s starting to become a complete joke.”

Despite the vandalism Mr Montgomery said he was looking forward to reopening the two courses next week if the first phase of lifting lockdown goes to schedule.

He said: “We’ll probably open team sheets next week.

“It will be in a very controllable environment  .

“It will be two-balls (two players at a time per outing) and we’re very lucky to have the two courses.

“The bad thing is that May is our busiest months and we’ve missed that but it could have been a lot worse.

“Being able to open now means we’ll get the rest of the summer.”

Police Scotland has been contacted for comment.
