Firefighters spent a fruitless night hunting for a fire after smoke was reported across Perth last night.
Crews from Perth were deployed after the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service received “numerous” calls about a burning smell.
Despite two fire engines and police officers driving round the area the source of the fire could not be found.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing a “haze” in parts of the city and a some claimed a burning smell was detectable as far afield as Methven.
A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said they received the first call at 00.44am and were still receiving calls at nearly 2am.
She said: “We went out numerous times but nothing was ever traced.
“We had both appliances from Perth out at various times and the police were also searching.”
The mystery smoke came just hours after 700 houses in the city lost power after a fire in an electrical transformer.
