Alyth residents will be asked to vote again on the future of three footbridges which were damaged beyond repair in last summer’s floods.
Perth and Kinross Council is working on a plan to replace the crossings with new modern structures.
In January, locals were presented with a series of options for repairs, as part of a wider redevelopment of the town centre.
The majority of residents consulted (52%) voted to restore all three bridges. A proposal to replace just two bridges received 44% of the vote.
But after further investigation, the local authority has found that creating three new bridges could lead to less parking.
A spokesman said: “We would like to provide what the Alyth community want, however after further recent detailed investigations by council engineers and planning officers, it has been found that if we were to build a third footbridge – in the middle between Barrel Wynd and the Alyth Museum – the result will be the loss of four parking spaces on Commercial Street.
“This is due to the new bridges having to be designed at a higher level to allow for better water flow, resulting in access steps taking up more space on the pavement.
“Given the lack of parking spaces in Alyth, we would like to put this final important decision to a community vote.”
Drawings showing the two options will go on display online and at the town’s library soon.
Voting forms will be distributed locally and should be returned by July 31.
A drop-in information session will be held at the town’s Ogilvie Rooms on July 12 from 6pm.
