A former teacher from Tayside collapsed and died just hours into a family holiday.
Margo Whitelaw took ill on the first day of a break in the Croatian city of Dubrovnik.
Margo, 63, from Coupar Angus, had travelled to the country last Thursday with twin sister Morag Falconer and brother-in-law Larry.
Family remembered the former Coupar Angus Primary teacher has someone with a “fiercesome” personality and wicked sense of humour.
Speaking at her home in Kirriemuir, sister Helen Ferdinand said: “Margo, Morag and Larry had just arrived in Dubrovnik and had gone for a walk in the evening.
“Margo told the others she wasn’t feeling too well and decided to return to the hotel.
“Morag and Larry continued with their walk and by the time they returned to the hotel the ambulance had been called and Morag had been taken to hospital.
“The hospital did all they could for her and Margo really put up a fight but sadly she couldn’t be saved. She died of a heart attack.”
Brother Ronald said Margo’s sudden death had come as a huge shock to the whole family.
He said: “We are all going to miss her so much.”
Describing Margo as the one who “took the burden” for the rest of the family, looking out for them all, Helen said she had hardly missed a day’s teaching in 30 years.
She said: “She was a proper old-school teacher. She had a bit of a fiercesome reputation but she also had a real soft spot and a wicked sense of humour. Once, just because she was dared, she turned up at school wearing a ballet tutu and a feather boa.
“She was much-loved by everyone she taught and was teaching the grandchildren of children she taught when she first went to the school.”
Margo grew up in Coupar Angus, attending the primary school she ended up teaching in.
She went on to Blairgowrie High School before doing her teacher training in Dundee.
She officially retired in 2013 but due to staffing issues she continued to teach at the school for another two years, finally giving up her teaching position in 2015.
Helen added: “Margo had no great bucket list but one thing she did recently was buy her spaniel pup, Robbie.
“She had always wanted a dog and was finally in a position to look after one.”
Margo was set to be cremated today in the Croatian capital Zagreb before making her final journey home on Thursday.
Helen said: “Morag couldn’t face coming home without her and sadly there’s no time for anyone else from the family to fly out.”
