An elderly man has suffered serious head and neck injuries after cycling into a truck in Auchterarder.
The victim, who is understood to be in his 80s, had to be airlifted to Dundee’s Ninewells Hospital following the incident in the Perthshire town’s Easthill Road at around 10.45am.
A passer-by raised the alarm and an ambulance arrived, although paramedics deemed the nature of the man’s injuries serious enough to call for the assistance of Scottish Charity Air Ambulance to get him to hospital faster.
The patient was stabilised and the Helimed 76 helicopter transferred him to Ninewells for further treatment.
His condition in hospital is unknown, although a Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson described the man’s injuries as “potentially serious”.
The spokesperson confirmed: “A gentleman in his 80s had been on his bicycle and ran into a stationary truck.
“He has head and neck injuries which are described as potentially serious.
“The call came in at 10.47am and a local ambulance crew was on the scene at Easthill Road in eight or nine minutes.
“They resquested assistance from Helimed 76.”
A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “Police Scotland received a report regarding a road traffic collision involving a cyclist and a stationary lorry that happened in Easthill Road, Auchterarder.
“The cyclist sustained serious injuries and has been taken to Ninewells Hospital by air ambulance for treatment. Inquiries into the incident are continuing and anyone with information to assist officers is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101.”
