M90 Perth crash: Temporary barrier planned after lorry driver killed in bridge plunge

M90 crash Perth
Emergency services at the scene.

A temporary barrier will be installed to allow the M90 near Perth to reopen fully after a lorry crashed off a flyover, killing the driver.

The HGV crashed off the M90 heading towards Broxden, landing on the slip road on to the A912.

The 55-year-old male driver, who has not yet been named, was pronounced dead at the scene after the collision near Craigend on Thursday morning.

Barriers at the side of the flyover have been destroyed, with the slip road at junction 10 to remain closed overnight as a result of the incident – which took place at 7.20am.

Inspection to identify permanent repairs

The A912 between the M90 slip road and Bridge of Earn will also remain closed overnight.

Bear Scotland, which maintains the road, told The Courier a temporary barrier will be put in place to allow the slip to reopen.

After this an inspection of the bridge will take place to identify what permanent repairs are needed, a spokesman said.

He added: “Our teams will be taking temporary measures by installing a temporary barrier system which will allow the slip road to reopen safely.

M90 near Perth remains closed

“Our bridges team will then need to inspect the bridge for any damage to the edge beam before a decision on what permanent repairs are required.

“We will continue to work closely with Police Scotland once their investigation determines the root cause of the incident.”

The bridge will be inspected.

Police remain at the scene on Thursday evening as an investigation into the crash gets under way.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “A man has died following a collision on the M90 near Perth.

“The incident happened at around 7.20am on Thursday.”

They added: “The 55-year-old man was driving a lorry southbound when it collided off the slipway. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.

“The lorry was transporting bags of potatoes.

“A road closure remains in place and inquiries are currently ongoing.”

Perth and Kinross Council confirmed the A912 will remain closed overnight southbound, between the M90 slip road near Rhynd road and Bridge of Earn.
