A burst water tank has temporarily closed a High Street shop and Perth’s main Post Office , with damage set to cost thousands of pounds.
Water is understood to have cascaded from the tank located in the attic area, poured into the upper level of the building and then down into the ground floor, leaving both WH Smith and the Post Office no option other than closing the entire shop.
One worker claimed it would cost the company around £500,000 to repair and added the shop could be closed until Monday.
Several printed notes were posted on the inside of the blacked -out shop, stating the closure was for “technical reasons.”
The note read: “We are currently unable to open this store. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and will be re-opening as soon as possible.”
A small note was also left detailing alternative post offices which can be used — Craigie, Letham and at Dunkeld Road.
Angry pensioners complained about the apparent lack of information around the closure.
Jean Ferguson, 75, of North Methven Street, Perth, said: “This is terrible and a sad indictment on Perth that its main post office is shut without a suitable explanation. Many elderly people and folk on benefits use this post office as it is the main one in the city, so this is a disgrace.”
Alice Robb, 71, of Tay Street, Perth, added: “I know of many people who have to cash their benefit money here. It couldn’t have come at a worse time for many folk, with people posting Christmas gifts abroad and the like.”
A spokesperson for WH Smith plc confirmed there had been a problem with a water tank and “flooding” issues in the building. She added the company could not confirm when the shop will re-open.
