Shoppers looked on in horror as an elderly man collapsed beside a lorry in one of Perth’s main routes through the city.
Traffic almost ground to a halt in part of the city centre at around 11.25am on Friday with motorists diverted along Scott Street following the incident in South Street.
It was initially thought the man – aged in his 80s – had been knocked down by the lorry, but police later clarified that he had collapsed due to a medical condition and had fallen near the HGV.
Passers-by watched in horror as the incident unfolded, with the pensioner being treated by paramedics at the scene – located near the pedestrian crossing in South Street, outside Greggs the Bakers.
Police officers were swiftly in attendance, with the road reduced to one lane immediately after the accident.
After a few moments of serious concern as the casualty lay in the road witnesses said he had been able to stand. One onlooker, who wished to remain anonymous, described the man as “walking wounded.”
He was taken into the back of an ambulance to be checked for injuries by medical staff.
A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Police Scotland attended after a road traffic collision involving a pedestrian and a lorry at South Street, Perth, which happened at 11.25am.”
And a spokesperson for the Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed they treated the man, aged in his 80s, at the scene. He was then taken to hospital by ambulance after it was established he had collapsed at the scene.
It’s understood the man had collapsed from a medical condition and didn’t suffer any serious injuries as a result of the accident.
Traffic was initially at a standstill following the accident, and was restricted to one lane for around 30 minutes while ambulance staff treated the pensioner. The street was fully open to traffic just after noon.
