Police will be out in numbers visiting Perth pubs prior to tonight’s football match between St Johnstone and Rangers at McDiarmid Park.
Officers have warned that they will clampdown on any drunken supporters they encounter and that stewards at the stadium will also search fans from both clubs to prevent flares being brought into the ground.
A large crowd is expected, with a big travelling support understood to be coming through from Glasgow.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers will be visiting licensed premises before, during and after the match to ensure the safety of patrons and will work closely with stewards at the ground to enforce legislation and provide a reassuring presence for both residents and visitors to the city.
“Supporters are reminded that it is an offence to try to enter the stadium in possession of alcohol or whilst drunk and this will be strictly enforced by police and stewards on duty.
“Police officers will also enforce legislation in respect of pyrotechnics and supporters can expect to be searched by stewards prior to entering the ground. Where appropriate, offences are detected, as well as being refused entry to the match, fans may be arrested and we will actively seek football banning orders.”
He added: “We know that the majority of fans will bring their families and friends with them to enjoy the football and police officers and stewards will be in and around the football stadium in order that you can watch the match in a safe environment.
“We’re asking supporters to be respectful to residents in our local community and be patient when leaving the ground after the match. Assist us in ensuring this is a fantastic sporting occasion for all.”
The kick-off for tonight’s game is 7.45pm.
