The Vale of Atholl Pipe Band held its annual junior piping and drumming competition at the weekend, with competitors from across Courier Country taking part.

The event, which took place at Pitlochry High School on Saturday, was the 42nd year of running the popular competition which was open to all pipers and drummers aged 18 and under who live in Dundee, Perth and Kinross and Angus.

The youngsters also have to be members of pipe bands in the Dundee, Perth and Angus Branch of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association.

Competition organiser Gillie McNab was pleased that the whole event had run so smoothly.

“I was also delighted with the number of children in the practice chanters’ classes which bodes well for the future of piping,” she said.

“The comments from the judges were that it was really good to see so many keen youngsters obviously enjoying playing their instruments and that the standard of playing is so high that it’s a pleasure to judge this competition.“

The pipers had a close battle for the champion trophies with Douglas Mair, of Kinross, winning the 15 to 18 champion title and Cameron Bullard, of Glenalmond College, getting runner-up.

And in the under-15 age group, the champion piper was Brogan Townsley, of Luncarty, with Archie McNab, of Methven, winning the runner-up prize.
