Scarecrow traffic police which are helping put the brakes on drivers at an accident blackspot have been rescued by residents after council bosses threatened them with the chop.
The bogus officers were installed on the edge of Coupar Angus, near to the spot where two-year-old Harlow Edwards was knocked down and killed last October.
Perth and Kinross Council pledged to remove the mannequins, claiming they could be a dangerous distraction for motorists despite claims by local people that they have been successfully slowing down traffic.
But the dummies had vanished by the time officers arrived to investigate them.
The Courier understands the pair – dubbed “speed sentinels” by local road safety campaigners – have been taken into hiding by residents.
The mannequins, who first appeared three weeks ago, were praised by Harlow’s parents. Dad Steve Edwards said: “You would not believe the difference a little stunt like this has done to slow every passing vehicle down to the correct speed.”
