Controversial plans for a quarry expansion near Blairgowrie could be given the go-ahead despite more than 100 objections from locals.

Laird Aggregates Limited wants to expand Marlee Quarry – which has been in operation for more than 20 years – into neighbouring fields.

It would allow for about 75,000 tonnes of sand and gravel to be extracted each year from the site, which is to the south-west of Blairgowrie.

In documents submitted to Perth and Kinross Council, the firm says existing reserves are likely to be “exhausted” in the next two years.

Laird describes Marlee Quarry as “integral” to its business plan and says expansion would prolong the life of the quarry.

Locals have previously expressed their opposition to the proposals – saying the expansion would damage the landscape and cause noise and disruption.

A Facebook page has also been set up in opposition of the plans.

A total of 103 objections have been formally lodged through the council. Reasons include:

  • Visual impact
  • Noise
  • Road safety
  • Impact on nearby special areas of conservation
  • Impact on climate due to CO2 emissions
  • Loss of agricultural land
  • Effect on tourism and recreation.

Blairgowrie and Rattary Community Council has mirrored many of the concerns raised by locals.

It feels the scale of the excavation area is “disproportionate”, says noise and dust pollution will affect the town and fears the work would have a negative impact on wildlife at nearby Rae Loch.

There are concerns for the impact on nearby Blairgowrie.

However, councillors are being encouraged to approve the proposals by Perth and Kinross Council planning officials.

A report going before a committee on Wednesday says: “Provided works
are undertaken in accordance with the recommendations of the environmental
impact assessment report, supporting information and planning conditions, the
development is considered to comply with the development plan.

“The application is therefore recommended for approval, subject to conditions.”

If approved, the quarrying would be allowed to run for no more than 15 years and two months.

Councillors will also discuss plans for holiday lodges in Dunkeld at the same meeting.
