Police units are on scene and Police Scotland said others had been deployed to assist with investigations.
The activity focuses on a bin and follows calls from a member of the public after they heard “beeping” from the bin.
Witnesses have reported that the beeping continues, describing the sound as “weird”.
There is not believed to be any cause for concern on the part of residents, with the cordon thought to be precautionary.
Nonetheless, the blockade could remain in place for some time.
The closure is causing some congestion within the city centre.
