Power giant SSE was forced to evacuate its Perth headquarters after reports of smoke billowing from the roof.
Fire crews were scrambled to the Dunkeld Road offices just after 1.40pm on Thursday.
Burning cables connected to solar panels on top of the building were extinguished before emergency services arrived, a fire service spokeswoman said.
Firefighters stayed on the scene to examine the panels and check for any remaining hot pockets.
A member of staff said that hundreds of employees were kept outside in the car park for about two hours.
An SSE spokeswoman said: “Colleagues in a section of SSE’s head office in Perth were temporarily vacated due to a small amount of smoke escaping from the attic space in one of the buildings.
“The fire brigade attended to ensure the building was safe before allowing SSE employees to return to their desks.”
