Perthshire confectioner Athole Tablet, which was this week forced to recall two of its products, is cooperating with a Food Standards Scotland probe.
The Meikleour firm withdrew batches of its Scots Tablet and Iron Broo Tablet after small traces of metal were discovered.
A machinery fault has been blamed for the problem and the company has stressed it has taken swift action to ensure contamination will not be repeated.
It said it was “shocked” by the scare, having “worked to the highest quality” and safety standards since opening.
Food Standards Scotland is continuing to investigate the contamination and Athole Tablet said it was “cooperating fully”.
“Athole Tablet has been producing handmade Scottish Tablet based on 25 years of experience and it prides itself in the excellent quality of its products,” a spokeswoman said.
“This is made in accordance with very high food safety and hygiene standards and is subject to thorough testing and sampling procedures to avoid health and safety risks.
“We were therefore extremely shocked to hear that a small piece of metal was found in our tablet.
“This was traced to a machine fault and affected only a small batch of product and we took urgent steps to recall and prevent the further sale of the affected batch.”
The firm said the machine had been immediately removed from use and disposed of and assured customers that “steps have been taken to ensure this will not happen again”.
