Private parking firms have been urged to “root out” the rogue companies which have dented public relations with the industry.
Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP, Murdo Fraser, said measures to improve confidence in the sector would provide a “level playing field” for operators.
The politician made his remarks at a British Parking Association (BPA) conference in Stirling on Thursday.
Mr Fraser has spent the last two years campaigning for better regulations and took his message to the lion’s den ahead of his member’s bill consultation in the Scottish Parliament.
Mr Fraser said: “My early discussions with the British Parking Association have been extremely productive and I look forward to bringing the industry with me as I seek to improve relations between parkers and providers.
“Above all, it’s about providing a level playing field for everyone, by rooting out the rogue parking companies the industry has an opportunity to improve its image and public perception especially in places like Perth.
“Ensuring that motorists are not deterred from using private car parks for fear of complex meters and hard-to-fathom rules is a must and I look forward to explaining, in more detail, my ideas to the conference.”
The BPA welcomed Mr Fraser’s involvement.
Andrew Pester, chief executive, said: “We are delighted that parliamentarians are listening and taking decisive action to ensure the private parking sector operates in a consistent and transparent manner for the motorist.
“The BPA has been working with the Scottish Government for some time, calling for better regulation of the private parking sector.”
Mr Fraser has been vocal in his opposition to the operation of Smart Parking in Perth.
The controversial firm is responsible for a number of locations in Perthshire, including PRI and the Kinnoull Street multi-storey.
