An adventurous Kinross businessman is to cycle coast to coast across America for charity.
Alan Corsie will spend six weeks travelling between San Diego in California and St Augustine in Florida, and hopes to raise £3,000 for Alzheimer Scotland in the process.
The challenge will see Alan cycle six to eight hours a day, with an average distance of 85 miles a day, to keep up with the organised ride.
Taking time away from the day job at his engineering firm, Alan who has prepared for the ride since the start of the year, is ready for what lies ahead.
The 55-year-old, who sets off on the 3,000 trip on Sunday, said he was inspired to saddle up after three members of his family were hit with the disease.
He said: “I decided to sign up to the TransAmerica cycle challenge to help raise funds for Alzheimer Scotland as my mum has been diagnosed with the early stages of dementia and my gran and uncle were also diagnosed with the illness, so I’m hoping to raise as much as possible to support this terrible illness.
“I’m really looking forward to cycling through the desert and the diverse and ever changing landscape from the Pacific to the Atlantic all from the saddle.
“I’ve always enjoyed cycling but due to work commitments I’ve maybe not cycled as much I could have. With a good few months training under my belt, I’m looking forward to getting started on the adventure.”
A spokeswoman from Alzheimer Scotland said: “What a real physical and mental test this will be for Alan as he sets out on the coast-to-coast cycle ride.
“With around 90,000 people living with dementia in Scotland, it is our biggest health and social care challenge and it isn’t going to go away.
“We’re so grateful to Alan for challenging himself for dementia and to everyone who has donated money so far.”
