An MSP has called for assurances over the future of an A&E unit in Tayside.
Murdo Fraser, the Perthshire MSP for the Tories, raised fears in Holyrood that Perth Royal Infirmary is under threat following an NHS plan to shunt emergency surgery to Ninewells in Dundee.
Mr Fraser said there is “serious concern” among Perth residents on “the future viability” of the emergency department from pursuing that plan.
“What assurances can the cabinet secretary give my constituents that the A& E unit in Perth has a secure future under this Government and will not be downgraded or closed?” he said.
Health Secretary Shona Robison suggested opposition MSPs were fuelling concerns, saying: “The PRI is a very important district general hospital and a very important part of the infrastructure of the national health service.
“Therefore, I hope to get rid of any scaremongering that might have been taking place on that issue.”
