Liam Colgan’s family returning to Germany following two ‘credible’ sightings of missing man

The family of Liam Colgan are returning to Germany following fresh ‘sightings’ of the missing man.

The Dundee United fan and former Perth College UHI student disappeared while on his brother Eamonn’s stag weekend in Hamburg in the early hours of February 10.

Friends and relatives last saw the 29-year-old in the Veermaster Bar after which he was identified on CCTV footage from the Baumwall area.

The Inverness man’s family believe he is alive and may have suffered a concussion and memory loss following a fall on the night he went missing.

On Tuesday morning the Help Find Liam Colgan Facebook page gave an update on the appeal to trace the 29-year-old musician.

The statement released said there were two “credible” sightings of Liam in Hamburg, in Altona and the Reeperbahn last Thursday.

Liam’s brother Eamonn and his partner Susan are travelling back to Hamburg this week “on the strength of these sightings”, with a photograph provided.

However the Help Find Liam Colgan page added that the image was “not conclusive”.

The statement said: “It has now been two months since our good friend Liam disappeared towards the end of a night out in Hamburg.

“Since that time a wide ranging search, described as ‘unprecedented’ by the German Police, has been undertaken by family, friends, supporters and local police with the belief that Liam needs help to find his way home.

“On Thursday last week our hope for a positive outcome was renewed due to two credible sightings being reported in Altona and at the Reeperbahn.

“On the strength of these sightings Liam’s brother Eamonn and his partner Susan will return to Hamburg this week to give fresh impetus to the search.

“One of the sightings provided us with a photograph which, whilst not conclusive, was the decisive factor for Liam’s family to make this trip.

“Whilst we are not overly optimistic regarding the photo we have received we feel there are similar characteristics between the male in the photo and Liam that need to be investigated.

“We must also consider that Liam has been missing two months now and his appearance will have changed.”

They have also confirmed that a body recovered in a river in the Wandsbek area on April 9 was not Liam.

It adds: “Our assumption is still that Liam may have suffered a head injury and is unaware of who he is.

“We ask that anyone who thinks they have spotted Liam to try to speak to him, take a photo (if safe to do so) and immediately report your sighting to Hamburg Police by telephone on 040 4289 56789 or 110 and to our Facebook page so that we can follow it up.

“If any information can be gathered through conversation with him about his current habitual movements, including sleeping and eating arrangements, this could be vital in helping us make the breakthrough to find Liam.

“In response to speculative media reports in Germany yesterday April 9) we can confirm that the body recovered from the river in Wandsbek was not Liam. We send our heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s family.

“There are a number of ways you can assist with the search for Liam. Please become familiar with Liam’s appearance and look out for him in the streets (see Facebook and findliamcolgan.com for photos).

“You can contribute to our poster campaign by printing and hanging up posters in your neighbourhood. We are also very grateful for financial donations through the ‘Go Fund Me’ page (search help find Liam Colgan) to help the family with ongoing costs.

“Please continue to keep Liam in your conversations to make more people aware of his disappearance and share our hope for positive news soon.”
