One person has died and five have been injured following a three-vehicle crash on one of Perthshire’s busiest routes.
Four fire and rescue appliances were called following a three vehicle collision on the A9 Perth to Inverness road at The Hermitage, near Dunkeld, involving eight passengers at around 2.30pm on Tuesday.
A further four ambulances were dispatched, as well as a trauma team and a Special Operations Response Team.
Police said that one person has died and the road was closed in both directions for around six hours while officers deal with the incident.
It was reopened at around 8.30pm on Tuesday.
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 2.31pm to reports of a road traffic collision involving three vehicles on the A9 near Dunkeld.
“Operations control immediately mobilised a number of fire engines.
“Crews left the scene after ensuring the area was made safe.”
Three of the passengers escaped the collision before the fire and rescue team arrived, with hydraulic equipment used by the fire service to remove doors, sides and the roof of one vehicle.
Of the five that were trapped the ambulance service attended to four of the individuals on the scene.
One passenger required immediate CPR treatment from a fire officer and a member of the trauma team.
The A9 has been closed between Little Dunkeld and Birnam since before 3pm.
A spokesman for the Scottish Ambulance Service said: “We received a call at 2.33pm to attend a road traffic incident on the A9 near Dunkeld.
“We dispatched four ambulances, a trauma team and a Special Operations Response Team to the scene and six patients were transported to Ninewells Hospital, Dundee.”
Two fire and rescue appliances were called to the incident from Perth along with one from Pitlochry and another from Blairgowrie. Senior managers were also on scene.
A spokeswoman added: “Traffic is currently being diverted through Dunkeld, with heavy vehicles stacked as the diversion is not suitable for them.”
Traffic Scotland said that both northbound and southbound lanes would be affected for “more than an hour”.
The organisation added: “The A9 is closed in both directions between Little Dunkeld and Birnam due to a road traffic incident.
“Drivers should avoid the area if possible and expect delays. HGV traffic is being stacked at locus.
“Drivers are advised to use an alternate route and allow extra time for their journey.”
