A Perth city centre pavement has buckled in the heat.
Stunned shoppers said the concrete walkway on Mill Street rose and broke, forming a ridge, on Thursday afternoon as temperatures soared to 30C.
Perth and Kinross Council said that by 4pm, surface temperatures were as high as 50C.
Pedestrians were kept away from the broken slabs, while engineers were drafted in to smooth out the section.
One on-looker said: “It just rose up really quickly. It was like something from a horror film.”
A local authority spokesman said: ““Due to the extreme temperatures experienced yesterday, there was an issue with a small section of the footway on Mill Street, Perth.
“Surface temperatures were upwards of 50 degrees in many sites and although rare, this can cause an expansion of the paving resulting in deformation of the surface. The paving has been made safe until a long term solution is found to help prevent this from happening again.”
