A woman has been killed and a man is said to be fighting for his life following another horrific crash on the notorious A9 in Perthshire.
Emergency services were called to the incident at Dalnaspidal just before 3pm on Sunday and police immediately blocked off the road to allow paramedics and firefighters access to the scene.
The Courier understands the collision involved a lorry and a car, and the occupants of the latter were said to be trapped in the wreckage and had to be freed by fire service personnel.
A woman was pronounced dead at the scene, police have confirmed, while a man was airlifted to a hospital in Glasgow with life threatening injuries.
No other details about the victims have been divulged as yet and will not be released until next of kin have been informed.
Firefighters from Perth, Kingussie, Dunkeld and Kirkmichael attended the incident throughout the afternoon, and the road was closed between Wade Bridge and Dalnacardoch Lodge in north Perthshire.
The closure is expected to remain in place for much of the night as crash investigation teams work to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
Drivers were warned by police on social media to expect delays, with officers advising motorists to use an alternative route where possible.
Those warnings failed to assist those who were held up on the A9 however, and police said partner agencies had worked to “assist with ensuring welfare issues”.
Water bottles were provided to people stuck in the traffic jams in the heat, along with any other assistance required.
“The public are thanked for their patience in this matter,” a police spokesperson added.
