Liquids seized by security staff at Edinburgh Airport have helped contribute towards £100,000 being donated to Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance (SCAA).
The airport embarked on a range of activities to raise the money for SCAA, including advertising space, a staff runway run, sponsored cycle events and employees taking part in the Edinburgh Marathon.
The £100,000 funding is a record charitable amount raised by Edinburgh Airport. The airport was the charity partner of SCAA over 2018.
Liquids, sealed and in bottles which had not been tampered with, confiscated in the security hall of the airport were donated to be used as raffle prizes by SCAA. On-site bucket and foreign coin collections also went towards the total figure raised.
David Craig, chief executive of SCAA, which is based at Perth Airport, Scone, highlighted the importance of the financial donation made by Edinburgh Airport.
“To be chosen by the staff to receive their support and backing as their charity partner throughout 2018 was a great honour and a wonderful boost for us during our fifth anniversary year,” he said.
“It was a pleasure to work with the country’s busiest airport and witness the enthusiastic efforts and hard work of staff and supporters in making this fantastic donation possible.”
Anna Light, head of engagement at Edinburgh Airport, said: “Our corporate charity is something we all rally behind and our staff are at the heart of this record sum because they have supported SCAA throughout 2018 in a variety of ways, be it bake sales, sponsored cycles and even running the Edinburgh Marathon.
“We’ve had a great year with SCAA and we really value the relationship we have with them because they do crucial work across the country, saving lives and keeping people safe every single day.”
SCAA currently operates one helicopter, an EC135-T2i, and one rapid response vehicle – taking expert paramedic care to the scene of emergencies, whatever the location. SCAA then transports patients to specialist hospitals to receive medical treatment.
