A woman who was first on the scene of a crash that closed a busy Blairgowrie street says it was lucky no pedestrians died during the incident.
The witness, who does not want to be named, raced to the aid of a driver in his 60s after a car collided with a lamppost on the A926 Boat Brae, Rattray at around 11.30am on Sunday.
She said: “I was just opposite and heard a noise. I saw a car careered over the pavement.
“Instinct took over. I opened the door, went into his car and took his pulse. I told him not to worry and tried to calm him.
“Luckily he was fine. He said he just wanted to call his wife. He was a lovely gentleman.”
The rescuer, a former nurse, dialled 999 and shortly afterwards two fire engines, two ambulances and several police officers arrived.
She added: “All I thought about afterwards was that were there joggers or children walking there, or parents with babies and buggies there, they would have had absolutely no chance.
“If anyone was walking there they would have died.”
The driver, thought to be from Alyth, was not seriously injured but the road was closed for an hour as emergency services cleared the area.
A police spokesman said: “Police Scotland attended a one-car road traffic collision in Boat Brae, Rattray, Blairgowrie about 11.30am yesterday (19th), where a car collided with another parked car and a lamp post.
“The driver of the car was taken to hospital but was not seriously injured. The road was required to be closed for a time to allow for investigation work and recovery of the vehicles damaged, and was re-opened about 12.35pm.”
