Facebook and Instagram users across the UK and the wider world reported problems using the platforms on Thursday afternoon.
The website Down Detector recorded a huge spike in issues affecting the social media sites from about 3pm.
On Twitter the hashtags #Facebookdow and #Instagramdown were both trending for several hours.
Users said they were unable to update their feeds.
Others reported issues when trying to share links to Facebook, with a message appearing which read: “Something went wrong. We’re working on getting it fixed as soon as we can.”
A statement on the official Instagram account read: “We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble accessing Facebook’s family of apps, including Instagram. “We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible.”
The problems were not just limited to the UK with Down Detector receiving reports of outages across Europe, the US and South America.
We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble accessing Facebook’s family of apps, including Instagram. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible. #InstagramDown
