Scotland could be as hot as Egypt as a week-long “Mediterranean melt” sees the country reach 25C (77F) on the hottest days of the year so far.
A weather map showed a 400-mile-wide “subtropical surge” of heat from the Azores.

The Met Office described conditions as “Mediterranean”, forecasting most of Scotland will have long periods of sunshine for a week.
Bank Holiday heat yesterday saw highs nudge 22C in Scotland, with the Met Office expecting to see 21C today, 18C tomorrow and 23C on Thursday.
The temperature will peak at 25C on Friday, dropping to 22C at the weekend.
This would beat last Wednesday’s 24C hottest day of the year in Scotland, and be as hot as Alexandria in Egypt.
Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna said: “It’s Mediterranean weather. High pressure sees dry, warm and sunny conditions ahead.”
A Met Office forecaster said: “Temperatures are on the rise this week.”
The Weather outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: “Summer has started early, with computer models showing up to 25C in Scotland later in the week.”
Forecaster John Hammond of weathertrending said: “Heat is building again.”
