Seventeen new coronavirus cases have been recorded across Perth and Kinross in the past day as a cluster associated with a local factory grows – the highest daily total in the area since April 22.

A breakdown of the latest Public Health Scotland data shows that 31 people in Tayside tested positive for Covid-19 from Thursday into Friday.

Of this number: 17 were recorded in the Perth and Kinross Council area, 11 were in Dundee and three were in Angus.

There was one new case in Fife.

Friday’s figure is the third highest daily total of Covid-19 cases recorded in Perth and Kinross since the beginning of the pandemic. Eighteen positive tests were confirmed on April 22.

A total of 68 positive cases have now been associated with a Covid-19 cluster at the 2 Sisters food processing plant in Coupar Angus. Of this figure, 59 are workers and nine are people in the wider community.

Speaking at the Scottish Government’s daily coronavirus briefing on Friday afternoon, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said that only a “small number of cases in Tayside” are not linked to the 2 Sisters cluster.

She added there is currently “minimal evidence of community transmission” in the region.

It comes after Dundee recorded its highest number of positive cases since May 16 on Thursday. From Wednesday into Thursday: 12 positive cases were recorded in the city, seven in Angus, and eight in Perth and Kinross.

Across the whole of Scotland there were 71 new coronavirus cases in the past day, compared to 77 the day before.

The total number of people who have tested positive for the virus in the country since the beginning of the pandemic is now 19,605.
