Two people have died of coronavirus in the past 24 hours – the first since July 16.
Nicola Sturgeon made the announcement as part of her daily coronavirus briefing.
The fatalities were in the East Dunbartonshire and Glasgow areas.
It comes after 67 new cases were recorded across the country, bringing the total to 19,988.
The number of people in hospital has risen by 6 to 249 and two people are in intensive care, a rise of one.
Ms Sturgeon said: “Unfortunately I also have to report that in the past 24 hours two deaths were reported to Public Health Scotland of patients who first tested positive in the first 28 days.
“This is the first time that any newly registered deaths have been reported in our daily figures since July 16 and it means that the number of deaths under that measurement is now 2,494.
“I think all of us have become used to hearing news of no deaths under these daily figures. These two new deaths are of course devastating for those who will be grieving the loss, but they should also be a reminder for all of us that the threat of Covid hasn’t yet gone away.”
Separate figures from the National Records of Scotland showed that by Sunday, August 23 there had been 4,222 deaths where coronavirus was confirmed, and where coronavirus was suspected.
That includes six deaths over the period of the week to August 23, Ms Sturgeon said – three more than the previous week.
Four of those deaths were in care homes, she added.
She went on to state the total deaths recorded last week from all causes was 40 higher than the five-year average for the same time of year – though the First Minister stressed this figure could “fluctuate”.
