American Pastoral, based on Philip Roth’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, will be released in the US on October 21. As well as directing, McGregor, who grew up in Crieff, stars in the film alongside Oscar winner Jennifer Connelly and Dakota Fanning. American Pastoral explores the political and social upheaval in the USA during the 1960s. McGregor stars as Seymour “Swede” Levov, a former high school athlete who marries a beauty queen. However, their seemingly-perfect life is torn apart when his teenage daughter is accused of an act of political terrorism. Philip Roth is one of the USA’s most celebrated, and controversial, novelists. McGregor stepped into the director’s chair after Phillip Noyce dropped out. Filming and editing was completed last year. McGregor has also recently finished filming on the sequel to Trainspotting.
