Almost all flights in and out of Scotland’s three major airports have been called off due to freezing weather from Russia.
Glasgow Airport has confirmed there will be “no further flights” in and out of its runway on Wednesday, and will update on Thursday’s journeys later on in the evening.
Edinburgh Airport said that “most” airlines had cancelled their services to and from the city until lunch time tomorrow.
Aberdeen International Airport said all British Airways and Flybe journeys arriving and departing from Dyce have been called off. However staff confirmed the runway remains open for “all other flights”.
There are reports of passengers having to spend the night in Glasgow Airport, with the Red Cross said to be distributing bedding to passengers due to jet off on holiday.
A weather system from Russia nicknamed the “Beast from the East” has brought heavy snow and freezing winds to Scotland, closing hundreds of schools and causing widespread travel chaos.
A Glasgow Airport statement said: “Due to continued severe weather conditions and the large number of flights which airlines have had to cancel, there will be no further flights to or from Glasgow Airport for the remainder of the day.
“Further heavy snowfall is forecast and we will provide updates regarding tomorrow’s scheduled services later this evening. Anyone with travel plans should contact their airline directly for specific flight information.”
