Locals have been posting photos and videos of a huge thunderstorm which battered the region on Friday evening.

People across Tayside and Fife who were looking to the skies for signs of the “blood moon” – the longest lunar eclipse of the 21st-century – were instead left watching on in awe as thunder and lightning struck the region.

The thunderstorm, which raged for some time on Friday evening, was accompanied by a heavy downpour of rain.

Huge lightning bolts and loud, prolonged rumbles of thunder were seen and heard above Dundee, Angus, Fife and parts of Perthshire.

It comes after the Met Office issued a yellow thunderstorm warning for Tayside and Fife, with “torrential rain”, hail and flooding all possible until 2pm on Saturday.

The mercury climbed to 28.2C at Strathallan Airfield in Perthshire on Friday, making it the fifth hottest location north of the border, and only just shy of the 30.4C Scottish high reached at Lossiemouth.
