A man has been attacked in his home by masked thugs carrying weapons.
The 29-year-old was injured in the assault, which spilled out into the street in Irvine.
His two attackers made off and he managed to get help from a neighbour.
He was then taken by ambulance to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock where he was treated for injuries to his head and body and has since been released.
The attack at Herbertson Crescent happened at around 10.45pm on Thursday.
The suspects were both wearing balaclavas and dressed in dark clothes. One was tall and the other shorter. It is not known if they are male or female.
Detective Constable Gavin McKellar said: “This is a quiet area and we do believe that the attack was targeted, however, even so, this was a vicious attack on the man.
“Quite a few people came to the aid of the man but we still need to speak to anyone who was in the area and who saw the two suspects making off. We believe they may have got into a small black car in Tollerton Drive and then drove off.
“We want to hear from anyone who saw the two of them together, putting on or taking off their masks, or if they saw them hanging about prior to the attack either in the car or on foot.”
