Hundreds of hens are ready to start a free-range retirement in Scotland as much-loved pets – but only if homes can be found for them by the end of next week.
The 500 ex-commercial hens are being rehomed by the British Hen Welfare Trust in Peebles and Denny on July 27 but 300 still need homes.
They have been living in cages laying eggs to be sold in supermarkets or put into processed foods.
However, once they reach 18-months-old their egg laying slows down, so the hens are sent to slaughter unless the BHWT steps in to rehome them.
The charity works with farmers around the UK and last year rehomed more than 70,000 hens who are now all enjoying new lives.
Loran McGuiness, Denny and Peebles co-ordinator, said: “If you’ve got a bit of room in your back garden please consider rehoming some of these hard-working hens.
“They make the most wonderful, funny, loving pets and, nine times out of 10, they’ll continue popping out eggs as a sign of their gratitude.”
