A search and rescue operation is said to be under way for the pilot, who was alone on-board the jet at the time. The 48th Fighter Wing aircraft – which was based at RAF Lakenheath, Suffolk – was taking part in a training exercise. It crashed at about 9.40am. The US Air Force said the aircraft was on a training mission with one pilot on board at the time of the crash. A statement from the 48th Fighter Wing said: “A US Air Force F-15C Eagle crashed at approximately 9.40am today in the North Sea. “The aircraft was from the 48th Fighter Wing, RAF Lakenheath, United Kingdom. “At the time of the accident, the aircraft was on a routine training mission with one pilot on board. “The cause of the crash as well as the status of the pilot are unknown at this time, and UK Search and Rescue have been called to support.” More to follow.
