The trailer for the new season of fantasy TV epic Game of Thrones has landed to an incredible amount of fanfare across the world.
Warning: For those who haven’t seen up to season six of Game of Thrones, this article contains spoilers
Season seven of the show is without a doubt the biggest TV event of the year, and when the trailer emerged online last night – offering the biggest glimpse yet into the storyline – fans were sent into a frenzy.
The series is based upon George R.R. Martin’s best-selling “A Song of Ice and Fire” books.
However, the storyline of the show has now overtaken those of the novels, meaning millions of fans across the globe are desperate for any plot details.
Seasons seven and eight of Game of Thrones, the final two in the franchise, will both be seven episodes long.
What did we learn from the Game of Thrones season seven trailer?
In all honesty, not a huge amount.
However the sight of Daenerys Targaryen, the rightful heir to the Iron Throne, arriving on the soil of Westeros will have sent goosebumps down the spines of fans.
Where has she landed? A lot of the signs point to her ancestral home of Dragonstone, or Storm’s End. And the sight of her walking across a huge map of the Seven Kingdoms is surely an indicator of the epic invasion to come.
Additionally, footage of Tyrion Lannister on a Westeros cliff with a dragon overhead will surely only further fuel rumours he may one day fly one of the fire-breathing beasts.
A battle involving the Lannisters also looks imminent, with soldiers donning the lion of Castelry Rock seen on the march in the trailer. The voice of Cersei Lannister declaring “what ever stands in our way, we will defeat it” is a sign of things to come.
But who are they going to battle with? The Martells? The Tyrells? Daenerys and her army? Shots of the Unsullied fighting might indicate so, but it could be almost any house in the Seven Kingdoms (or all of them).
Winter is fast gripping the Seven Kingdoms. With Arya Stark seen breathing out the freezing cold air, she could perhaps be heading north to find her brother, newly-declared King in the North, Jon Snow.
The latter also declares in the trailer that “the great war is here”. This is a sure sign that the army of the dead is making swift progress towards The Wall.
The sight of the sinister giant Ser Robert Strong will also send a chill down the spines of those who remember his antics in season six.
Elsewhere the conniving Littlefinger standing behind Sansa Stark points to further scheming, just what Theon Greyjoy’s role will be in the final saga of the epic series remains to be seen and a shot appearing to show Daenerys sat upon the Iron Throne is very ambiguous.
However probably the most spine-tingling moment in the trailer is the sight of a Dothraki horde on Westeros soil, on horseback, screaming into battle at full pelt with Daenerys’ mightiest dragon, Drogon, flying above them.
What did the internet have to say?
A huge amount, of course, but here’s a few of our favourites from Twitter.
