Reports of gunshots near Notre Dame Cathedral

There have been reports of gunfire near Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

Police in the French capital say a man assaulted a police offered near the landmark was shot and injured by officers.

Some in the French media are reporting the man shot was armed with a hammer.

The officer is said to have been guarding the police station opposite the cathedral.

Paris police have told people to avoid the area.
