Today marks 100 years since women first voted in a UK general election. To celebrate, a statue of suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst was unveiled in St Peter’s Square, Manchester.
Supporters marched from Pankhurst Centre, the former home of Emmeline Pankhurst and the birthplace of the suffragette movement, and the People’s History Museum to watch the unveiling in St Peter’s Square at midday.
The statue by sculptor Hazel Reeves captures the political activist balancing on a chair with one hand outstretched, demanding votes for women at a rally.
A statue of another leading suffragette, Annie Kenney will be unveiled in Oldham later this afternoon.
