Three-time Formula One world champion Niki Lauda, who won two of his titles after a horrific crash that left him with serious burns and went on to become a prominent figure in the aviation industry, has died. He was 70.

For Ronnie Peterson and teammate Niki Lauda, it's all gloom as they consider their options for the coming season during the 1972 United States Grand Prix. Driving for STP-March F1 had been a nightmare, as they both hopped from March 721 to March 721X to March 721G in the hope of finding a reliable car with speed. Peterson, seen as having the potential to be a future World Champion was the luckier, scoring a fourth place in the US. Lauda was in dire trouble, with no points for the season. He had taken out a loan to pay for his seat at March, and was desperate to find results and monetary return. Peterson would stay at March one more year, and then join Lotus for 1974 where he would win four Grands Prix and finish 3rd in the World Championship. He would finish 2nd in the 1978 World Championship posthumously. Lauda would move to Marlboro-BRM in 1974 and then to Scuderia Ferrari, where he would win the 1975 and 1977 World Championships. He would add a third with McLaren in 1984.
