The Whitehall area of London was put on lockdown following the discovery of a suspicious item.
Downing Street was among the streets closed off by police as officers probed the find.
The force was called at noon, with bomb disposal teams called in to assess the “suspect item”.
The City of Westminster Police tweeted: “Temporary road closures in place around Whitehall whist suspect item assessed. Police attended at 12.01pm today.
“Specialist officers are now in attendance. Thank you for your patience.”
