Successful Tayside chartered quantity surveyor Bill Keillor dies at age of 78

Retired Tayside chartered quantity surveyor Bill Keillor, a founding partner of the KLM Partnership and former Kirriemuir Rotary Club president, has died at the age of 78.

He was the eldest of five sons born to Bill and Violet Keillor of Bucklershead, Kellas.

His father served with the Royal Engineers and on demob his set about forming the joinery and vehicle building business known as W B S Keillor Ltd at Bucklershead.

Growing up with such a background it was inevitable the young Bill was destined for the construction industry and after schooling at Mattocks Primary, Wellbank and Morgan Academy, he became an apprentice quantity surveyor with W J R Christie and Partners, qualifying in 1964.

During that time he met his future business partner, George Martin and also his wife, Isobel who he married in 1963. The couple have three sons, Bill, Douglas and Malcolm.

In 1969 he and George formed their own firm, Martin and Keillor and the business grew during the 1970s and 80s with offices in Broughty Ferry, Inverness, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

In the 1990s, the firm merged with a Glasgow practice and became known as the Keillor, Lawrie, Martin Partnership (KLM).

Bill was president of Dundee and Tayside Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 1998/99 and in his retirement was an active board member of Dovetail Enterprises, the Fleming Trust and the Agnes Smith Trust.

Always a very active man, he enjoyed the great outdoors, having been introduced to hillwalking by business partner George.

He played hockey for Morgan Academy FP Club and was proud to be part of the team which won the inaugural Scottish Cup in 1963. Bill’s association with Morgan FP lasted throughout his life and his hockey friends meant a great deal to him. He also enjoyed skiing, sailing, curling, golfing and cycling.

Bill was actively involved in many aspects of community life in Kirriemuir and served on the committees for the Scout Group, Westmuir Hall and Thrums Walkers.

Latterly he was a member and Past President of the Rotary Club of Kirriemuir.

He is survived by his wife, three sons and nine grandchildren.
