A Trip Back in Time: Menzieshill

Each week, we will take you on a trip back in time with a selection of photographs picked from DC Thomson’s vast archives. This week, the focus is on Menzieshill in Dundee.

Our first image shows a crowd of people enjoying the sunshine on Menzieshill Gala Day on May 28 1977.

The second photo dates from October 15 1987 and shows members of the 20th Menzieshill Girls Brigade Company. The picture shows, from left to right, Morag Bowman, Sheelagh Smith, Isabel Binnie, Linda Fox and Margaret Soutar.

In the third photo, from August 13 1984, we see the flooded basement of Menzieshill High School. There’s rather a lot of water!

The fourth photo, from June 25 1976, shows Menzieshill High School under-15 football team being presented with the Dundee United FC Trophy which they won earlier in the year. The presentation was made by the rector, Mr B Gowans, and an additional presentation was made to one of the players, Colin Craig, who reached the final of the penalty kick competition at Hampden Park. Colin came second in the contest and to mark this he was presented with a statuette. The under-15 team won the league championship and reached the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup, only to be beaten after extra time.

The fifth photo dates from November 21 1962 and shows the interior of Menzieshill Church being painted. We’re loving the painter’s handlebar moustache!

Nancy Cook and Barbara Lyall can be seen behind the counter of the AB Cook newsagent shop on Charleston Drive the sixth photo. It was taken on November 1 1984.

In the final photo, a group of men learn how to play golf in Menzieshill Community Centre on January 11 1968.
