Each week, we will take you on a trip back in time with a selection of photographs picked from DC Thomson’s vast archives. This week, the focus is on the Whitfield area of Dundee.
Our first image shows a self defence class for women in action at a day centre on Aberfeldy Crescent. It was taken on February 18 1982. The classes were started after a survey indicated that many women in Whitfield were uneasy about going out at night for fear of being attacked.
The second picture, from August 31 1993, shows Whitfield Primary pupils celebrating the school’s 25th anniversary with a European flag.
The third photo shows competitors at a cross country championship at Whitfield High School on March 24 1990.
Our fourth image shows a group of people waiting at a bus stop outside a housing scheme. It was taken on May 18 1971.
The fifth picture, from July 9 1996, shows Longhaugh Quarry infill being topped with red soil.
Out sixth image shows the damage caused by a fire at St Saviour’s High School on February 24 1977.
The seventh picture, from September 12 1979, shows Whitfield High School pupils learning about the art of bee keeping.

The ninth photo shows Whitfield pensioners lining up at the Post Office on February 2 1978.
The 10th image, from October 28 1969, shows a group of children playing at the entrance to a tunnel. It was a popular place to hang out in Whitfield.
The 11th image shows people in fancy dress at the Whitfield Gala on August 15 1984.
The 12th, rather bleak, image, shows children exploring one of the housing estates on August 19 1970.
In the 13th picture, from October 28 1969, workers start to create a new pathway through a scheme.
The final image shows the Skarne housing scheme. It was taken on July 10 1080.
