Perth has been particularly badly hit over the years, resulting in a £25 million project to install barriers along the river Tay in 2001. In 1916 large swathes of the country were hit by floods. Three inches of rain fell on Dundee in 24 hours, breaking a 15-year record. Rail embankments in Fife were washed away and cattle in Angus were left stranded. In Scone, residents were forced to scramble out their back windows as the front of their home collapsed.
