Nick Clegg secretly filmed a version of a pop video with the former Liberal Democrats leader taking the role of film star Tom Hanks, it has been revealed.
The recreation of the video for Carly Rae Jepsen’s hit I Really Like You was made in the run-up to last year’s general election in the hope that it would boost Mr Clegg’s popularity by “going viral”.
In the original film, Hanks is seen waving, posing for selfies and exchanging high-fives with passers-by as he walks in the streets of Manhattan. The Times revealed that Mr Clegg re-enacted the scenes in Gravesend, Kent.
Mr Clegg has just returned to frontline politics as the Liberal Democrats’ Brexit spokesman.
The video – made at a cost of almost £8,000 – never saw the light of day during the election campaign.
And the Liberal Democrats remain determined to keep it under wraps.
A spokesman told the Press Association: “Yes, we made the video – and no you can’t see it.”
