A US delegate attending COP26 in Glasgow has tested positive for Covid-19 the day after attending an event with Nicola Sturgeon and Boris Johnson.
Eric Garcetti, the Mayor of Los Angeles, returned a positive test on Wednesday – three days into the climate conference.
A tweet from his office has confirmed he is now self-isolating in his hotel but is “feeling good”.
The post reads: “Mayor Garcetti tested positive for COVID-19 earlier today.
“He is feeling good and isolating in his hotel room. He is fully vaccinated.”
Mayor attended event with FM and PM
It comes after the 50-year-old attended a breakfast summit with 40 leaders from across the world – including the prime minister and first minister – earlier this week.
The devolved leaders of Wales and Northern Ireland were also present, however no further cases of the virus have been linked to Mayor Garcetti.
According to the COP26 website, all attendees in the blue zone – where negotiations are taking place – must wear face masks and get tested for the virus daily.
A spokesperson for the event said: “Everyone’s safety and security at COP26 is of the utmost importance – we have worked closely with public health authorities to put rigorous Covid mitigation measures in place.
“Delegates are required to take daily lateral flow tests before gaining entrance to the venue.
“Anybody who develops symptoms, or receives a positive test, must self-isolate immediately and we have systems in place to support this.”
