Some businesses including banks, petrol stations, takeaways and garages will be able to continue operating despite sweeping restrictions being put in place across Scotland during the fight against coronavirus.
On Monday evening Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that the UK would be going into lockdown with people only allowed out for vital shopping, daily exercise, provision of medical care, or travelling to and from “essential” work.
She said the measures were “difficult” and “unprecedented”, adding: “They amount to what has been described as a lockdown. I am not going to seek to sugarcoat it in anyway.”
Scots have been told to work from home if they can.
Below is the full list of businesses which have been told to close by the UK Government – and those which can continue to operate.
All “non essential” premises are to close.
These businesses were ordered to shut from Monday, March 23. The exceptions to the closures are listed further down this article.
After three weeks have passed, the government will review the closures.
The measures will soon be enforceable by law under the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Business Closures) Regulations 2020.

- Restaurants, pubs and cafes which do not currently offer hot food deliveries can now do so.
- Cafes/canteens at hospitals, care homes and schools can operate. As can military canteens, prison canteens, and services offering food and drink to the homeless.
- Market stalls selling “essential” goods such as grocery and food can continue to operate.
- People using hotels as “interim” accommodation whilst a “primary residence is unavailable” can continue living there.
- Key workers can remain in hotels “where required”.
- People can continue to stay in commercial caravan parks where they are being used as permanent accommodation/”interim abodes”.
- Community/youth centres can remain open for “essential voluntary or public services” including food banks or homelessness operations.
- Places of worship can open for funerals – but only if social distancing guidance is followed – and for “solitary prayer”. Live streaming of services has been advised.
- Theatres/concert halls: live streaming of performances is permitted, in accordance with social distancing guidance.
