Councils run many of the essential services that matter most in our daily lives – but local elections can sometimes feel like the poorer relation when it comes to democracy in Scotland.
Turnouts tend to be lower and party leaders often bypass discussing schools, environmental services – and potholes – in favour of rehashing the big national arguments.
Your questions for the Dundee council election candidates
That’s why we asked every party represented on Dundee City Council and at Holyrood to put forward a candidate to answer the questions you want answered in the Scottish local elections 2022.
They discussed everything from levels of poverty and deprivation in the city to how to make sure the council is properly funded to provide the services that matter to you.
Along the way there were clashes over Scottish independence, must-see moments addressing local scandals and direct pitches from each party to earn your vote on May 5.
Informed decision at the Dundee ballot box
To help you make an informed decision at the ballot box, we put your questions to:
- John Alexander – SNP group leader and Dundee City Council leader
- Richard McCready – Scottish Labour and Co-operative councillor
- Derek Scott – Scottish Conservative and Unionist group leader
- Fraser Macpherson – Liberal Democrats group leader
- Alan Ross – Alba councillor
- Tanya Jones – Scottish Greens candidate

We will have more election debates for each of the local authority areas we cover.
